Outback Adventure (Barossa Valley)

 Balaklava 29/10-30/10

We have arrived in Blaklava named after the battle of the Light Brigade during the Crimean War.  Our main reason for visiting this small farming town is that we blew through the last trip and remembered having a great pie for lunch. It's official the Bakery makes the best meat pies in the world.  Melt in your mouth pastry with lots of chunks of tender steak. The caravan park has also turned out to be a real gem, Gary who runs the place is a character and they supply toweling bath mats for the showers so you have dry feet. While here we rode our bikes along the Shamus Liptrot Cycling trail which follows the former railway line to Halbury. 22km return trip. Only a little to see as it's mainly cropping in this area so heaps of fields of Barley and Wheat.  Halbury is a small farming town with just a few houses.  We also did the Lion Park walking trail along the Wakefield River which is dry at the moment.

Greenock 31/10-1/11

Today we travelled about an hour south to Greenock in the Barossa Valley.  We stopped off in Owen on the way to take a picture of the painted silo and are now camped in Centenary Park Greenock with the van facing the Cricket pitch.  We did the town history walk this afternoon and then drove the 5 km into Nurioopta for a look around. It was a hive of activity. Trick or Treaters everywhere.

Today we drove into Kapunda our first stop was the visitor centre where they had a great display of the history of Sir Sidney Kidman the famous Cattle King who was a huge landowner in Australia. One of the features of the town is the murals painted on the sides of buildings. Kapunda is another mining town where copper was discovered in 1842. The town has a great history walk/drive that you can follow.  We did most of it walking which included a trail around the remains of the copper mine.

Eden Valley 02/11-03/11

We have left Greenock and moved about 30 mins down the road to Eden Valley.  The towns in the Barossa Valley are close together so on the way to Eden Valley we stopped in at Tanunda and did the history walk. Unusually some of the stone buildings in the main street use Marble blocks.

The next stop was Angaston another nice town and another history walk.  There is a good rail trail here so we have decided to stay an extra day so that we can complete part of it tomorrow.
